Working to Save the People of Darfur
Senator Mikulski is an advocate for the people of Darfur:
- She supported legislation that declares the atrocities in Darfur a genocide and calls on all United Nation countries to work to halt the escalation of violence.
- She worked for passage of the Darfur Peace and Accountability Act, which:
- Authorizes the President to provide assistance to the reinforce operations of the African Union.
- Blocks assets and denies visas to any individuals responsible for acts of genocide in Sudan.
- She backed legislation to provide significant funding to increase humanitarian assistance and peacekeeping support in Darfur and increase funding for U.N. peacekeeping force in Darfur.
- She supported the creation of a special envoy in Sudan to help develop peace agreements.
Senator Mikulski supports the rights of women and children:
- She fought for legislation to amend the federal law to increase the penalties for trafficking women and children.
- She supports the United Nations Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children.
- She advocated for the Protection of Vulnerable Populations During Humanitarian Emergencies Act, which:
- Directs the Secretary of State to develop a comprehensive strategy for the protection of women and children affected by humanitarian emergencies.
- Provides health services to prevent sexual violence and the spread of HIV/AIDS.
Senator Mikulski is working to help fight the global war on AIDS:
- She supported legislation to increase funding for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
