  1. B- The Baltimore Oriole. The male Oriole's plumage is black and golden orange which is very similar to the colors in the Calvert family shield. The Calverts were a prominent Maryland family who were barons of Baltimore from 1625 to 1776.

  2. D- March 25. Maryland Day commemorates the landing of the 1st settlers on St. Clement's Island. They were brought here from Cowes, England by two ships: the Ark and the Dove.

  3. D- Jousting. Maryland was the first state to adopt an official sport.

  4. B- After Queen Henrietta Maria of England. The land that is now Maryland was a gift from King Charles I of England to the Calvert family. King Charles only asked for two things in return: Rent, payable in the form of 2 Native American arrowheads, and that the colony be named after his wife, Queen Henrietta, who went by her middle name- Maria.

  5. True- Harriet Tubman was born in Dorchester County. She was born into slavery, freed herself, then helped free many more slaves through the underground railroad.

  6. A- Johns Hopkins was a famous investor, director and Chairman of the B and O Railroad. He was also a famous philanthropist. In 1867 he arranged for the incorporation of Johns Hopkins University and Johns Hopkins Hospital. When he died in 1873, he left $7 million to be divided equally between the two institutions.

  7. C- 2131. Cal Ripken Jr. began his streak on May 30, 1982 at 3rd base in a game against Toronto at Memorial Stadium. He played his 2131st game on Sept. 6, 1995.

  8. A- O, Tannenbaum. The song originally was a poem written by James Ryder Randall, who was outraged at the news of Union troops being marched through Baltimore. The poem was then set to the popular song "O, Tannenbaum" and became very popular.

  9. C- Beautiful swimmer that is savory. The Chesapeake Bay provides a perfect habitat for blue crabs. In fact, the Chesapeake Bay provides 50% of the total blue crab harvest in the United States.

  10. B- The square dance incorporates many different dance moves from different cultures- England, France, Spain, Australia, Ireland, Italy, Germany, Mexico, Poland, Russia, and others. It was designated the state folk dance in 1994.
